Create a Carved Wood Effect or Wooden Text in Fireworks

- Draw out a rectangle 270 X 100 with a rectangle roundness of about 21.
- For the Fill choose Pattern > Wood.
- Now apply an Inner Bevel Effect to the rectangle with these settings:
Bevel
Edge Shape:
Flat
Width: 5
Contrast: 100%
Softness: 0
Angle: 135
Button Preset: Raised
- I wanted the wood pattern to be a little but darker so that when we apply
the highlight effect later it will show up more - plus I think it gives the
wood a richer look. I did this by changing the Hue/Contrast settings of the
pattern. You can play around with this to get the look that you want. Select
Effects > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation and set it to the settings below:

- Now for the text. Create a new layer above the rectangle. If the layers
panel is not open, click Windows > Layers to open the Layer dialog box.
Click the folder at the bottom of the box to insert a layer above the background
layer. Like most text effects the font you choose makes all of the difference.
I used Stencil, size 78. Type out the word Wood (or whatever you want).
- Give the text the same Fill as the rectangle above (Pattern > Wood)
but don't apply the Hue/Saturation effect. I thought it looked better without
it, of course you can try different settings.
- For the Stroke color choose a dark to medium brown (#663300).
- The stroke settings are the most important step for this particular effect.
Choose Unnatural > 3D with a Tip Size of 4.

- At this stage you should have something that looks like this:

- Here's the effects to apply to the text:
Inner Bevel 1:

Inner Bevel 2:

And a Glow effect (Shadow and Glow > Glow) This is the effect to leave
out if you want to create the text by itself without the wood background.

- As a last touch I gave the background a little highlight to make it look
like varnished wood. Go back to the layer that has the background in
it and select the rectangle. Draw out a new rectangle over this the same size
as the first (270 X 100) and fill it with a linear gradient (Black to White).
I just used the Black,White preset.
- Change the Layer Setting to Screen as shown below:

- Adjust the fill like the image below to give the upper left corner a
little highlight.
