Add Slide Footers
Open your Add Headers and Footers to Your Handouts presentation in PowerPoint. Save it with the name Dress for Success Slide Footers.
Exercise 1: Add Slide Numbers and the Presentation Name
Click the Insert tab.
In the Text group, click Header & Footer.
On the Slide tab in the dialog box, click Slide number . Note the boldface box that appears in the preview (lower right corner), indicating where the slide number will appear on the slide.
To include text on every slide, click Footer, and type your text. In this case, let's say it's the presentation name that you want, so type Dress for Success.
Place a check in the Don't show on title slide check box so the title will not appear on that slide.
Click Apply to All .
The footers does not appear on the title slide (slide 1) that's displayed. Click slides 2, 3, and so on to see the footers on the subsequent slides. The slide numbers will update accordingly if you add or delete slides.
Exercise 2: Restart Slide Numbering
Your slide numbers appear starting on the second slide, and the starting number is 2. For this activity you want the slide numbers to start with the number 1:
On the Ribbon, click the Design tab.
Look for the Page Setup group, on the left. Click Page Setup.
Under Number slides from, click the down arrow to change the number 1 that's there to the number 0.
Click the second slide thumbnail and check the number on this slide: it's now 1.
Look at the slide thumbnails in the left of the window, and you'll see that the first slide thumbnail is now labeled as zero (the number appears to the left of the thumbnail).
Exercise 3: Customize the Title Slide Further
You removed footers from the title slide, but you do want a date footer there.
With slide 1 selected (the title slide in the presentation), open the Header and Footer dialog box.
Notice that the footer and slide number check boxes are not selected (that’s because you selected the Don’t show on title slide option). These options are still selected for the other slides, though.
Select Date and time. The default selection here is Update automatically. That's what you want: a date footer that updates to the current date whenever the presentation is opened.
Click the arrow next to the date box to select your preferred date format.
The preview shows you where the date footer will appear on the slide; it will sit to the left of the other footers.
Now, here's a slightly tricky thing. Because the Don't show on title slide option is selected, the date won't show on this slide either. So, clear that option.
To keep these settings applicable only to this slide, click Apply .
The date appears — the sole footer — on the title slide.
Click to slide 2. You'll see that the other footers remain unchanged. They're not affected because the settings you chose applied only to slide 1.
Exercise 4: Change Footer Formatting
If you want to change the look of the slide footers, you do that on the slide master. You can change the type of font used, its size, or color, and the location or size of any of the footer placeholders on the slide.
Click the View tab. In the Presentation Views group, click Slide Master. The slides in master view contain all the styles and layouts available in the presentation.
(Note: The date format you selected for the date footer isn't reflected on the slides here because you applied it only to one slide; it is preserved in Normal view.)
Click the top slide thumbnail. This is the slide master itself; you make changes here that you want to apply throughout the presentation.
The slide master is displayed in the slide pane. You're going to change the font color for the footers. To do so, first click the first placeholder then while holding down the Shift key select the other two place holders.
Click the Home tab, click the Font Color button in the Font group, and click a different color; for example, choose a red color instead of the brown that is applied. The footer color becomes red:
Click the Close Master View button to exit and return to normal editing.
Now see how your footers look in Normal view. Click the Normal button at the bottom of the window, near the zoom slider. On slide 1, the date is in red, and all the other footers are too.
Resave the document.
