Creating a Storybook in Microsoft Word

You will create a book that will tell the story of a survivor of the Unnamed Storm. The book will be created in Microsoft Word and will be printed and bound in book form. The final product, the printed book, will then be judged and first, second, and third place awards will be presented for the best overall presentation of the topic.

First create a story in Word in normal mode. Complete writing the story then you will then format it into a storybook.

Once your story is finished, you will then format the document into a folded booklet or storybook layout. With your story open, follow the steps below:

Click File > Page Setup.

On the Margins tab set your options to what is shown below:

Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.

Insert Break

At the Break dialog box select Section break type > Next Page:

Now select all the text in the document and fully justify. To select all the text hold down the left mouse and drag over the text. Click the fully justify format options on the Formatting toolbar.

Now you should have a blank first page that will be your book cover. Now we want to number just the text pages and not the cover so the second page will really be your first page. Follow the steps below to number your pages.

View Headers and Footers

Click in the Footer Section of your first text page. It should look like the picture below:

On the Headers and Footer Toolbar click the Same as Previous button:

While your cursor is still in the Footer section of the first text page click Inert > Page Numbers:

Insert Page Numbers

At the Page Numbers dialog box make sure Alignment is Outside and the Show number on first page check box is checked. Click the Format button to open the Page Number Format dialog box:

At the Page Number Format dialog box click the Start at radio button and select 1.

Close the Header and Footer by clicking again on View >Headers and Footers. Now you are going to design the cover for your book. Click on the blank page that appears before page 1. Use WordArt and ClipArt to design your cover. Here is a cover I created:

Printing the document:

In the Print dialog box, select the Manual duplex check box. Word will print all of the pages that appear on one side of the paper, and then prompt you to turn the stack over and feed the pages again.

For Page range select All.
