Automative Community Service Logbooks

Through the lens of Homo Faber, you will keep a log of all community service hours in an electronic logbook created in Microsoft Excel. This is another example of how Excel can assist you in daily tasks. You will need to include a reflection column which will contain a hyperlink to a word document containing your reflections on your community service. The advisor's name will be the instructor who is supervising the inservice component. For my class, the Unnamed Storm of 1928 newspaper you created will be posted at the Palm Beach Public Library. This is an opportunity for you to share your findings with the community where the most devastating impact of the storm took place.

Open Microsoft Excel.
Save your worksheet the your name logbook (Nich's Logbook).
Fill in the information in the following cells:

B1	Type Your Name
B2	You will put Nicholson here because I am the one responsible for your logbooks.
A5	The date of community service.
B5	The description of the community service.
C5	Location of community service (For my project, you will list where you posted your finished newspaper article.
D5	Advisor over the community service project (For the newspaper article, you would put my name).
E5	The Number of Community Service Hours (For this project you will receive 1 hour.)
F5	For this project you will type in 'The Unnamed Storm Newspaper Article.' You will then create a hyperlink to your actual newspaper article. For other projects you would type 'Reflection Month Year' (Where Month and Year are the Month and Year you did the community service). This will also be a hyperlink to a word document where you will type a reflection on your community service experience.

Set your page setup to Landscape (File>Page Setup>Landscape).
Increase the cell width so all information can be seen in your cell. Click on the link below to see an example of the finished Excel Logbook. Try to include all information of one page. To check the page layout, click File>Print Preview.
See the logbook below for 7th grade to see how their logbook should look. The other grades will not fill in a description, location, advisor, hours, or reflections link until they have completed a community and service activity. When you have completed this activity, you will then fill in the description of the community and service, along with the date, advisor, and hours allotted by the advisor. Then you will type a reflections paper in Microsoft Word that describes the community and service activity that will be linked in your student logbook.

Notice the blue lettering in the worksheet above. This is called a hyperlink. When you place your mouse over the link it will turn into a hand. When you left click your mouse, it will take you to a different page. The page for this activity will be your newspaper article. To create a hyperlink, click in cell F5. Click Insert>Hyperlink. At the Insert Hyperlink box, type in the name of your logbook page (with no spaces) as shown below:
