Creating a Survivor Storybook of the Unnamed Storm
Your instructor will let you know at this time which activity you are to complete. You are only going to complete one of the below activities:
Through the lens of
,
you will create a book that will tell the story of a survivor of the Unnamed
Storm. That survivor will be told in the first person meaning you will create a story about how you survived this horrific storm. Make sure that all your facts are accurate and that the details in your book are things that actually happened during that time. The book will be created in Microsoft Word and will be printed and
bound in book form. The final product, the printed book, will then be judged
and first, second, and third place awards will be presented for the best overall
presentation of the topic.
First, open Microsoft Word 2007 by following the steps below:
Click the Start button, select Programs, and then click Microsoft Word from the menu list.
Click the Office button in the top left corner of the document windowand select new from the drop down menu.
Select new blank document:
Click the Office button again
and select Save As from the drop down menu and name your file The Unnamed Storm of 1928 Newspaper Article. See the information below on how you want to save your document.
Now you can start creating your story in this document. Don't worry at this point about font or style. You are just going creating a rough draft. Make sure that you save your document each time you close it to save new information you have entered. This will take several class periods. Once you have completed your story follow the steps below to create a storybook.
Change the Page Margins:
Select the Page Layout tab and click the small arrow at the bottom of the Page Setup panel.
This will open the Page Setup dialog box. Set your margins, orientation, and page set to book fold.
![]()
Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog boxYou will create a cover page later and do not want a page number on the first page —you want page 1 to appear on the second page of the document. First you need to insert a next page break to add a blank page to the beginning of your document.
Insert a Next Page Break:
With your cursor at the beginning of your story select the Insert tab and click on Page Break.
You should now have a blank page for your first page.Insert Page Numbers:
Notice that the cover page contains the number 1. You do not want a page number on your cover page and you want the number 1 to appear on your first page of text, page 2.
Under Header & Footer Tools, on the Design tab, in the Options group, select the Different First Page check box.
In the Header & Footer group, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers to open the Format Number dialog box.
In the Format Page Number dialog box in the Start at box, type 0.
Fully Justify Text:
Select all the text in your document (Ctrl + A) and then with the Home tab selected click the full justification button.
Now you should have a blank first page that will be your book cover. Now we want to number just the text pages and not the cover so the second page will really be your first page. Follow the steps below to number your pages. Close the Footer by clicking out of the Footer area. Now you are going to design the cover for your book. Click on the blank page that appears before page 1. Use WordArt and ClipArt to design your cover. Instructions for how to insert clipart is found below. Here is a cover I created:
Insert Clipart:
With the Insert tab selected click on the ClipArt button:
This open the ClipArt Task Pane. Type in a descriptive word for what you want to find in the Search for text box then click the Go button.
This populates a list of clipart images. Click once on the picture once to place it on your page.
Place your name at the end of the document:
Example: By Suzie Q
Printing the document:
While you will not be printing the document in class because you will be submitting the paper electronically I wanted to share with you how to print a storybook. In the Print dialog box, select the Manual duplex check box. Word will print all of the pages that appear on one side of the paper, and then prompt you to turn the stack over and feed the pages again.
For Page range select All.
